Boycott FedEx

Introduction

So like many people, it finally happened and FedEx angered me enough that I will never to business with them again.  Let me tell you a story.

Christmas 2022

So on Christmas, FedEx left something at my door.  The name didn't match mine.  The apartment number didn't match mine (the label had "apartment 2" but our apartment numbers in this property are three digits).  FedEx didn't knock on my door and didn't even ask if this was me or not.

    It sat for a week.

Finally, to get it out of the way, I went on FedEx's website and filled out the proper form to report that something had been left at my property (mispitched mail) and that I wanted them to send a FedEx driver out to get it.  I put in my address and phone.  I was never contacted.

Two Months Later

So two months later, it's legally ours.  I open it, it's a hair dryer/curler.  Ok, fine, we don't need one, but there's what appears to be a return label in the box.  We peel off the FedEx label and place what we think is a return label over this and I head out to a local FedEx.

When I get there, they say it's not a return label.  No worries, fine, I can pay to send it back like a good citizen.

Then they ask to scan my driver's license.  I refuse, saying that's a violation of my privacy.

They say that it's either that or I get my Fed Ex account number.  No worries, I pull out my phone and head to the FedEx website.  The first option to get that information is to chat with a representative, but when I click it, it says all their chat representatives are busy (i.e. it doesn't even redirect me, just displays this when I click that option).  Ok, no worries, so I call them on the phone

Their automated phone system doesn't understand "mispitched."  It hangs up on me when I say "mispitched mail" but then when it asks if I means something else and I say "no" to that.

So I call back and tell their automated phone system for my account number.  It's the 2nd option on their website, and their online chat wasn't working.  The automated phone system tells me to go to their website, which I had already done.

So I ask the person at the counter at FedEx if they can look up my account.  I'm already angry and fighting to control my anger.  They said they're just a store and they can't look it up.

I ask if they can look up the misdirected/mispitched mail report I put in 2 months ago.  They said they can't do that either.

But they won't let me ship without violating my privacy.

The Lie

Then the real reason I got angry and left happened.  Thank God I controlled my anger, as it's wrong to lose your temper and insult or yell at people.

They said their system "does not store" my info when it scans my ID card.  As a person who has their Linux Essentials, CompTIA A+ and CompTIA Security+ computer certifications, this was the final straw.  You see, if their system does not store the scan of your ID, it doesn't record what happened.  That would make scanning my driver's license pointless.

No, their system does hold on to your driver's license.  Even if that time period they hold on to it is a week or a month or until the package is delivered, their system holds a copy.  It has to, otherwise there was literally no point in scanning it.  Note, they didn't say scan like barcode reader, they said scan as in a photoscan.

So for them to tell me they "don't store" my driver's license is a complete and utter lie.  Then when I explain this concept of how computers work, they claimed they've been doing this for 3 years.  Of course, I don't know how long they've been doing that, but it's immaterial.

So I pointed out to them that USPS, UPS, and DHL won't ask to scan my ID.  I can just walk in, pay and ship.  They basically shrug off my concerns.

So ... Why We Should Boycott

Apparently people have been boycotting FedEx for a while now.  You can see articles like Inc.com The Hill Change.org Reddit and many other places.

So here's why, based on the bad experience I had today, I am calling to boycott FedEx.

  1. They never came and got this mispitched package.
  2. They put this package on my doorstep even though it was not labeled for me or my apartment number.
  3. They are VIOLATING YOUR PRIVACY by photoscanning your driver's license.  From a security aspect, this is a huge red flag because if someone was to hack FedEx, which has more or less already started taking place according to SC Media in 2021.  DHL was also hit.  Who's to say hackers could not get into FedEx and then just download all these ID cards (which have to remain in place at least during the transit of your package if they are to accomplish anything with them)?
  4. FedEx doesn't give stores the ability to look up mispitched mail reports (at least just to view them) or pick-up requests.  This is a huge loophole in their customer service.  What happens when someone who has asked FedEx to pick something up and it's been months comes in to ask FedEx to take the mispitched mail?  The service representative at the store literally can't do anything.  It would save FedEx so much money if a customer could come in when the FedEx delivery driver doesn't do their job and just hand the package to FedEx: they saved FedEx time and money by bringing it directly to them.
  5. FedEx's training policy for their employees must be horrible if they fight you when you come in rather than helping you.

So yeah, don't use FedEx.  I'm never going to use FedEx again.
