On Worship

Introduction

DRAFT  This page is a list of all times the word "worship" is used in the ESV.  This page is a work in progress.  I will give a little commentary to each one as I go along.

Old Testament

Genesis 22:5
Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.”

The Hebrew word here ("shachah") has the background meaning "to bow down."  I think this story (when God told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac) contains a lot of interesting information in what it doesn't say.  I think one thing we can learn from this is that we can worship even when we're sorrowful.

Genesis 24:26
The man bowed his head and worshiped the Lord
Genesis 24:48
Then I bowed my head and worshiped the Lord and blessed the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me by the right way to take the daughter of my master's kinsman for his son.

This comes from the story of Abraham's servant, who went to find a wife (Rebekah).  The word used is shachah (to bow down).  I think it's noteworthy that this servant, if you read the rest of the story, would probably have been considered an outsider to the Abrahamic heredity line, yet he also believes in God.  The mention of this servant could very well have been a very brief teaser preview from God about the future: about the gentiles being grafted in.

Exodus 4:31
And the people believed; and when they heard that the Lord had visited the people of Israel and that he had seen their affliction, they bowed their heads and worshiped.

Exodus 12:27
You shall say, ‘It is the sacrifice of the Lord's Passover, for he passed over the houses of the people of Israel in Egypt, when he struck the Egyptians but spared our houses.’” And the people bowed their heads and worshiped.

And when all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would rise up and worship, each at his tent door.

And they entered the house of Baal, and the house of Baal was filled from one end to the other.  He said to him who was in charge of the wardrobe, “Bring out the vestments for all the worshipers of Baal.” So he brought out the vestments for them.  Then Jehu went into the house of Baal with Jehonadab the son of Rechab, and he said to the worshipers of Baal, “Search, and see that there is no servant of the Lord here among you, but only the worshipers of Baal.”

These men, O king, pay no attention to you; they do not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”  Nebuchadnezzar answered and said to them, “Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the golden image that I have set up?  Now if you are ready when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, to fall down and worship the image that I have made, well and good. But if you do not worship, you shall immediately be cast into a burning fiery furnace. And who is the god who will deliver you out of my hands?”
But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”
Nebuchadnezzar answered and said, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent his angel and delivered his servants, who trusted in him, and set aside the king's command, and yielded up their bodies rather than serve and worship any god except their own God.
